Helping you to help yourself

About Me

Hello. My name is Bea. I have been a counsellor for 35 years. The satisfaction that comes from my work arises from the movement I see in my clients as they progress from a negative frame of mind to a more positive one, generally the result of the process of reducing stress and anxiety. It is wonderful to witness the growth in confidence and self-esteem.

The early part of my career was spent as a health professional working with families many of whom were experiencing stress. I decided to undertake training to learn the skills and awareness needed to be a more effective practitioner, and completed a 3 year course in counselling skills. I have built on these skills over the last 35 years and expanded my range with numerous short courses and training events.

As well as my standard counselling practice I also act as a supervisor. There are two strands to this service. The first applies to people working in stressful jobs, such as teachers and teaching assistants. I see these clients on a regular basis. Secondly I act as a supervisor and counsellor for students who are undertaking training in counselling skills. I am available for those who wish to undertake supervision.

Training course I have completed:

City and Guilds FE Teaching Certificate

Health Visitors Qualification

Fieldwork Teachers Course

Transactional Analysis 101

Diploma in Counselling (3 years)

Family Therapy

Supervisors and Assessors Course

Leadership in Management

Adult Attachment Theory

Child Care Index

The latter part of my career was spent as the Designated Nurse for Child Protection and I piloted the role of Clinical Advisor throughout the Canterbury and Thanet district.

I am a member of BACP and have an advanced DBS.

Making the decision to see a counsellor is a big step to take - but it can be a positive one. Please read on to find out more about how I could help you.

What my clients say...

Counselling with me

My experience as a health professional has given me insights into trauma and distress arising from childhood. I have been able to help clients recognise that they my be stuck in negative patterns and learned behaviour, and to find ways of working through such difficulties. This often implies identifying repeated patterns of behaviour which are not useful to the client.

I have the skills and humane approach to help you put negative patterns of behaviour in their place and move forward in a more positive way. The psychological models I draw on are Person Centred Theory, Transactional Analysis, Attachment Theory amongst others. Where appropriate I share these insights with clients who often respond positively to a new understanding of their unease.

I am familiar with the many forms of distress presented by my clients: bereavement, difficulties with personal relationships at home and at work, low self-esteem, depression, parenting problems, school refusers.

Speak in Confidence

I always assure my clients that what is shared with me in a counselling session remains entirely confidential. Your thoughts and feelings are received by me with sensitivity and empathy and without any judgement or criticism.

A problem shared...

Apart from being a sympathetic and understanding listener, there is one aspect of my practice that I would like to highlight. I have a deep understanding, drawn from a number of psychological theories, that enables me to understand the conflicts and emotional discomfort that a client may be experiencing. Where appropriate, I share these insights with the client. This can help to provide a framework enabling them to see more clearly what is troubling them. Such an understanding can lead to a growing confidence in moving forward.

Make better, healthier new choices

The text above under A Problem Shared in part answers this aspect. As you begin to understand the conflicts or emotional pain that are troubling you, there will be a growth in a more positive outlook with this greater self-awareness. You will start to shed more negative aspects of your outlook and behaviour and will become a more positive person. This can result in a healthier you – both psychologically and in terms of your general health.
